Bought thin sheets of balsa wood, cut out shapes, and tried painting them. The paint warped the balsa wood and only one coat made the woodgrain still show through. The shapes were too thin and it would take a lot of work (2 layers maybe?) to make them actually look like “raised shapes made out of paint” so I’m abandoning this method.
